Today’s Feature: Ford F-450

With plenty of power, immense torque, modern equipment and proven workhorse credentials, the F-450 is a great addition to anyone who needs powerful and practical transportation. Be it towing, hauling, carrying passengers, or crossing roads rarely taken, the F-450 does it all with ease.

Design of the Ford F-450

There isn’t really much to say about the exterior design of the F-450. It is massive, reassuring, boxy and, frankly, a bit scary if you are looking at it from a regular car as it is approaching you. The grille and headlights continue the boxy, rectangular note.

Even the side mirrors are huge, which is both great for the design and practical when towing something large. One of the rear features that break the boxy look is the wheel arches which bulge out noticeably.

Interior of the Ford F-450

Understandably for a vehicle of such size, the cabin is spacious and also very practical and filled with safety and comfort features. Of course, they vary through different trim levels, but even the entry level model is definitely an up-to-date offer. You can find out more about this in our section on trim levels of the Ford F-450.

Design of the interior is a great mix of practicality, reassuringly massive features, spaciousness, and high-quality materials. The central console is very wide and practical while dashboard controls are easy to operate even with gloves on. This means that they are large, well-positioned and that they give great feedback, so that you know what you’ve done even without looking at the controls. Loads of physical buttons and knobs make this even easier.

The loading bed is not the only place where you can put things. In fact, it can be reserved for bulkier loads, since there are plenty of storage spaces around the cabin. Aside from the bins, shelves, pockets and cup holders, you also get an additional storage area under the rear seats that is as wide as the F-450’s cabin.

The Sync 3 interface is intuitive and very easy to use. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard.

Engines and Drive of the Ford F-450

The engine in the F-450 is a 6.7 l V8 turbo diesel with 450 hp and 935 lb-ft of torque! This kind of twisting force puts incredible strain on the gearbox, but the TorqShift 6-speed automatic does an amazing job both in low load conditions and when the F-450 is throwing all that it has on it.

The engine delivers push with ease, just a portion of a second after you press the pedal, giving the turbo some time to spool up. That portion of a second later and an overwhelming delivery of torque gives immense confidence. You can definitely rely on this engine and gearbox to do all you need in tough working conditions, everyday driving, and off-roading.

Braking and steering also inspire confidence. Brakes are capable of stopping the huge body and they are very predictable. You only need a few moments behind the wheel to develop a very precise feel of the force you need to apply for suitable braking results. Adaptive steering changes the amount of feedback and weight to match the driving conditions perfectly. When cruising the steering is light and unobtrusive. Start cornering heavily and the steering adds both weight and feedback to give you more accurate control of the vehicle.

The F-450 is very comfortable. Even when loaded to the brim, the F-450’s capable suspension gives a very comfy ride even for very long trips. Other than its suitability for work, this makes it perfect for adventurous families who can travel in complete comfort and still haul and tow loads of adventure equipment and vehicles.

However, it’s not just about the equipment. The cabin is well isolated from outside noise and the seats are very supportive and comfortable. We expected more wind noise from this kind of a body and definitely more of an engine note from a V8 diesel, but both of these are kept under control perfectly.

Trim levels, again, greatly affect available equipment, but it is worth noting that the F-450 has some features essential for a vehicle of this size, such as blind spot monitoring that you can program to match the length of the trailer you are towing, or a rearview camera that you can easily mount at the back of your trailer and connect to the infotainment screen. Both of these are very important for a vehicle that is very long on its own and also has enough power and torque to tow trailers of almost any size.

More great features are reserved for towing and hauling, since the truck can tow up to 15,400 kg with a gooseneck hitch or 9,500 kg without it.
